Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — Progression, Prestige and the Career Menu Explained
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, and the official Call of Duty blog has detailed exactly how Career progression works at launch. Here's how Multiplayer and DMZ leveling, the 10 Prestige levels, Prestige Master, weapon camos and Weapon Prestige all fit together.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on October 23, and Infinity Ward has now published the full breakdown of how your Career progresses once you're in the fight. On October 19, the official Call of Duty blog posted "Ready for Launch: Modern Warfare 4 Progression and Prestige," laying out exactly how leveling, Prestige, weapon mastery and challenge tracking work across Multiplayer and DMZ. Here's everything confirmed, section by section.
This matters right now because Campaign Early Access is already live for digital pre-order holders, and DMZ Early Access opens October 20 ahead of the full launch — so plenty of players are already racking up XP under this exact system.
1. The Career Menu: Where Everything Lives
All of your progress is tracked through the Career menu, split into four areas:
- Progression — Multiplayer Level Unlocks, DMZ Level Unlocks, Prestige Levels and Prestige Master Levels
- Challenges — Camos, Calling Cards and Armory
- Profile — Emblem, Calling Card, Clan Tag, Prestige Icon and Prestige Color
- Showcase — the Operator and up to three Calling Cards and a Wallpaper displayed on your profile
Some of these menus only unlock after you Prestige for the first time or reach specific points in your Career, so don't be surprised if a tab looks locked on day one.
2. Leveling Up: Multiplayer and DMZ Run on Separate Tracks
Multiplayer progression runs from Level 1 to 55, unlocking weapons, equipment, perks, field upgrades, killstreaks and new Create-a-Class loadout slots along the way. Early milestones include Demolition and Sniper default loadouts at Levels 2 and 3, Create-a-Class itself at Level 4, the VEL 46 SMG at Level 5 and the Bomb Glider killstreak at Level 6. Warzone access, once Season 1 integration lands, will run on this same Multiplayer level track.
DMZ has its own, longer ladder running from Level 1 to 70, unlocking extraction stations, station upgrades, 3D Printer recipes, Operator skins, consumables, survival kits and fire support. The first DMZ level alone unlocks the 3D Printer station and recipes for a 1-Plate Armor Vest, a Bandage, a Small Backpack and a Medkit — the basics you'll need to survive your first Hajin deployment.
Notably, DMZ XP counts toward your overall Multiplayer level, but Multiplayer and Warzone XP do not count toward your separate DMZ level — so if you're chasing DMZ-exclusive unlocks, you'll want to actually play DMZ.
3. Prestige: Classic vs. Regular — Which Track to Pick
Once you hit Level 55, and again at the start of every new Prestige, you're asked to choose between two tracks:
- Classic Prestige — resets all Multiplayer and Warzone level unlocks and your Create-a-Class progress, but grants a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token, and bonus cosmetics tied to that specific Prestige.
- Regular Prestige — restarts you from Level 1 but keeps every Multiplayer and Warzone level unlock and all of your existing Create-a-Class loadouts intact.
The Permanent Unlock Token from Classic Prestige lets you permanently unlock one Loadout item of your choice — the official post specifically suggests prioritizing a perk, field upgrade, killstreak or piece of equipment over a weapon, since weapons are easier to re-unlock through normal leveling.
You can also choose "I'll Decide Later" if you're not ready to commit the moment you hit Level 55.
4. Ten Prestige Levels, Each Tied to a Classic Call of Duty Game
Modern Warfare 4 has 10 numbered Prestige levels, and each one is themed around a different release in the Call of Duty back catalog, complete with a loading screen, emblem, weapon charm, decal and a themed weapon blueprint (in both a Regular and a "Prime" Classic variant):
- Prestige 1 — Call of Duty (2003): Mosin-Nagant blueprint "The Vet" / "The Vet Prime," plus an instant Sandstorm Operator skin
- Prestige 2 — Call of Duty 2 (2005): PPSh-41 blueprint "Calm Resolve" / "Trench Fiend"
- Prestige 3 — Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007): an SAS Operator skin, "Watchtower" / "Watchtower Prime"
- Prestige 4 — Modern Warfare 2 (2009): Finn LMG blueprint "Terminal" / "Torn Up"
- Prestige 5 — Modern Warfare 3 (2011): an Army SF Airborne skin, "Razor One" / "Razor One Prime"
- Prestige 6 — Ghosts (2013): Axion blueprint "Ghosts Legend" / "Ghosts Legend Prime"
- Prestige 7 — Infinite Warfare (2016): an Army SF Airborne skin, "Warfighter" / "Warfighter Prime"
- Prestige 8 — Modern Warfare (2019): M4 blueprint "141" / "141 Prime"
- Prestige 9 — Modern Warfare II (2022): a Reece Operator skin, "Sable" / "Sable Prime"
- Prestige 10 — Modern Warfare 4 itself: Sang 9mm blueprint "Boksu" / "Boksu Prime"
Prestige 1's instant reward, for example, is the Sandstorm Operator skin for the Army SF Airborne Operator, handed out the moment you commit to that first Prestige.
5. Prestige Master: The Long Road to Level 1,000
Finish all 10 Prestige levels and you move into Prestige Master, which runs all the way to Level 1,000. From Levels 56–99, rewards arrive every 5 to 10 levels; from Level 100 onward, they arrive every 25 levels. Confirmed named rewards include an instant Paragon Operator skin, a "Best of the Best" loading screen at Level 60, a "Prestige Master 56" emblem at Level 65, a "Pinnacle" weapon charm at Level 70, a "Containment Breach" weapon sticker at Level 80, and a "Master Renegade" HAN 86 assault rifle blueprint at Level 90.
Level colors also change as you climb — orange unlocks at Level 56 and navy at Level 100, with further colors, including multi-color and animated options, unlocking every 25 levels after that. Legacy Prestige icons pulled from past Call of Duty games unlock at Level 100 and then every 100 levels beyond it. True Prestige Legend-tier rewards are, for now, marked [CLASSIFIED] on the official post.
6. Weapon Camos: Military, Special, Completionist and Mode Mastery
Camo progression is tracked per weapon and splits into several tiers:
- Military Camos (8 per weapon) unlock by Weapon Level. On the HAN 86 assault rifle, for example, the eight camos unlock at Weapon Levels 10, 18, 25, 34, 42, 50, 57 and 65.
- Special Camos (3 per weapon) are challenge-based rather than level-based. The HAN 86's three are "Smoke" (Weapon Level 25, mounted kills), "Stormwave" (Weapon Level 46, silencer kills) and "Red" (Weapon Level 72, kills without dying). The Sang 9mm pistol's three are "Autumn" (Weapon Level 13), "Snakeskin" (Weapon Level 25) and "Space Time" (Weapon Level 38, Akimbo kills). Once you complete a weapon's Special Camo set, it joins a shared pool usable across other weapons too.
- Completionist Camos cover broader challenges: Gold (15 eliminations in one Multiplayer match or 100 in one DMZ match), Platinum (headshots, kills from behind, hipfire kills and other weapon-class-specific feats), Harmonic Break (double kills, one-shot kills and similar) and Divergence (completing 33 Harmonic Break challenges across your arsenal).
- Mode Mastery Camos are mode-specific: Mercurial Drift, Polyatomic Reforged and Orion Reforged in Multiplayer; Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio in DMZ; and Parallax, Damascus Reforged and Empyros in Warzone — though the Warzone set stays classified until Season 1 integration.
7. Weapon Prestige and the Pyroclast Camo Track
Once a weapon hits its Max Level, it becomes eligible for its own, separate Weapon Prestige. Weapon Prestige 1 resets that weapon's level back to 1 and relocks most attachments — but Apex and Blueprint attachments stay unlocked, and any camos, reticles, accessories, decals, stickers and blueprints you've already earned on that weapon are kept. Attachments shared across multiple weapons also don't get relocked just because one weapon Prestiges.
Weapon Prestige has its own exclusive camo track, Pyroclast: the base "Pyroclast" camo unlocks at Weapon Prestige 1, Level 1; "Pyroclast Terminus" at Weapon Prestige 1 Max Level; "Pyroclast Scatter" at Weapon Prestige Master Level 150; and "Pyroclast Cascade" at Weapon Prestige Master Level 250. Weapon Prestige Master itself kicks in automatically once a weapon clears Weapon Prestige 1 Max Level — from there, the weapon's level simply keeps climbing instead of resetting again, and attachments stay unlocked.
8. Reticle, Daily and Calling Card Challenges
A few smaller systems round out the Career menu:
- Reticle Challenges — equip an unlocked Optic, then open Gunsmith > Appearance > Reticle, and rack up eliminations while aiming down sights to unlock each new reticle style. Progress toward these is shared across Multiplayer, DMZ and, once Season 1 lands, Warzone.
- Daily Challenges — three Multiplayer challenges refresh each day for bonus XP, with an extra reward for clearing all three, and you get one free reroll per day if a challenge doesn't suit your playstyle.
- Calling Card Challenges — split into Regular categories (Multiplayer Mastery, DMZ Mastery, Shared Mode Mastery) and Elite categories (Elite Multiplayer Mastery, Elite DMZ Mastery, Elite Campaign Mastery). Clearing a full Mastery Set earns an animated Mastery card; clearing an entire category earns another; and clearing every category earns a rarer card still. You can track up to nine challenges at once.
9. A Bonus Track for Modern Warfare II DMZ Veterans
Players who took part in the original DMZ beta back in Modern Warfare II get a dedicated reward track in Modern Warfare 4, tied to the same Activision Account and available starting October 20 during DMZ Early Access:
- Participation — a "Beta On Record" emblem and "Beta Squad" calling card
- 50 hours played — a "DMZ Beta 50 Hours" emblem and matching calling card
- Serpentine Camo unlocked — animated "Beta Serpent" emblem and "DMZ Slither" calling card
It's a nice touch for anyone who's been extracting from Al Mazrah since 2022, and one more reason to jump into the DMZ early access window and Forward Operating Base setup as soon as it opens.
10. Quick-Tips Recap
- Multiplayer runs Levels 1–55; DMZ runs its own Levels 1–70. DMZ XP feeds your Multiplayer level, but not the reverse.
- At Level 55, choose Classic Prestige (reset + 20% XP boost + Permanent Unlock Token) or Regular Prestige (keep everything, restart your level).
- There are 10 themed Prestige levels, then Prestige Master runs to Level 1,000.
- Weapon Prestige is separate from account Prestige and unlocks its own Pyroclast camo line.
- Check the DMZ Beta Rewards tab if you played the original Modern Warfare II DMZ beta — your account is already eligible.
