Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Early Access Is Live: Everything You Need to Know
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's Campaign Early Access went live on October 16, a week ahead of the game's October 23 global launch. Here's who qualifies, what Infinity Ward's Korea-set campaign covers, and what's still locked until launch day.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's Campaign Early Access went live on Friday, October 16, putting eligible pre-order customers into Infinity Ward's Korea-set campaign a full week before the game's global launch. With Modern Warfare 4 releasing worldwide on October 23, here's exactly who qualifies for early access, what the campaign covers, and what parts of the game are still locked until launch day.
1. Campaign Early Access Is Live for Digital Pre-Orders
Starting October 16, anyone who digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 gets early access to the single-player campaign, according to Activision's official announcement. The benefit applies specifically to the Standard Digital Edition and Vault Edition on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, and Steam. Activision has said Modern Warfare 4 will become available for pre-order on Nintendo Switch 2 later this year, separate from this initial wave of platforms.
Physical, disc-based pre-orders are not covered by Campaign Early Access — retail copies are expected to arrive closer to the October 23 release date instead. Activision notes that the exact start date and platform availability are "subject to change," so digital storefronts may not light up at exactly the same moment worldwide.
2. The Story: Private Park, Task Force 141 and a War That Won't Stay Contained
The Modern Warfare 4 campaign splits its focus between two very different soldiers. Players spend part of the story as Private Park, a young South Korean soldier facing live combat for the first time. What starts as a routine deployment collapses into chaos when North Korea launches a full-scale invasion, forcing Park and his unit into a desperate fight through collapsing cities and a series of counteroffensives.
Running parallel to that is Captain Price, now operating outside the chain of command he once served. A personal hunt for revenge pulls Price toward a weapon capable of shifting the balance of power in the region, dragging him into uneasy alliances and off-book operations with consequences he can't walk back. Activision describes the campaign as mixing large-scale battles and covert missions with combined-arms warfare and cinematic set pieces, spreading the conflict well beyond a single front line.
3. Standard Edition vs. Vault Edition: What You're Actually Paying For
Both the Standard Digital Edition and Vault Edition include the full game download and the same early access to the campaign and to the upcoming multiplayer Open Beta. The Hunter Killer Operator skin is included with both editions as well, though Activision's fine print notes it requires redeeming it through Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 or Call of Duty: Warzone on the matching pre-order platform, sold and downloaded separately, by October 23, 2027.
The Vault Edition adds a longer list of extras on top of that: the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack, the Special Forces Operator Pack, a Signature Weapon Collection, a season of BlackCell, and a DMZ Deployment Bonus for the returning extraction mode. None of those four extras are available on the Standard Edition. Activision's own comparison chart lays out the full split between the two editions side by side.
Activision has also referenced a Pre-order Loyalty Discount tied to the Vault Edition, though full terms for who qualifies and how it's applied are detailed separately on the official pre-order page rather than in the Campaign Early Access announcement itself. Anyone deciding between editions should check that page directly before buying, since Vault Edition pricing and bonus content can change platform to platform.
4. What's Still Locked Until October 23
Campaign Early Access is exactly that: campaign only. Multiplayer and the returning DMZ extraction mode stay locked for all pre-order tiers until Modern Warfare 4's full global launch on October 23. Players who want a taste of multiplayer ahead of launch will need to wait for the Open Beta, which both editions include early access to, though Activision hasn't locked in exact beta dates and warns that timing and platform availability remain subject to change.
That staggered rollout — campaign first, then the full package at launch — mirrors how Activision has handled Campaign Early Access on past entries, giving pre-order customers a head start on the story without spoiling multiplayer maps or DMZ content before release.
5. Who's Building Modern Warfare 4
Development is led by Infinity Ward, with the game launching globally on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Battle.net, Xbox on PC, and Steam on October 23. The PC version is being built out by Infinity Ward in partnership with Beenox for a fully optimized experience across Battle.net, Xbox on PC, and Steam. Separately, Infinity Ward is working with Digital Legends to develop a native version of Modern Warfare 4 for Nintendo Switch 2.
Activision's credits list additional support from Activision Central Design, Activision Central Technology, Activision QA, Activision Shanghai, Beenox, Demonware, High Moon Studios, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, and Treyarch — several of the same studios that spent the last year keeping Black Ops 7's current Warzone season running before shifting resources toward Modern Warfare 4's launch.
6. What Comes Next
With Campaign Early Access underway, the next fixed date on the calendar is October 23, when Modern Warfare 4 opens up fully — multiplayer, DMZ, and the rest of the Vault Edition's content included. That launch also marks the point where the game's post-launch live seasons begin, following the pattern Call of Duty has used since Treyarch wound down support for Black Ops 7; for background on how that transition has played out, see our breakdown of what comes after Black Ops 7.
Warzone integration for Modern Warfare 4 has not been given an official date yet. In the meantime, Warzone has already started rolling in MW4-related changes ahead of launch — including a new Operator skin toggle built around Modern Warfare 4's cosmetics.
