Quick Summary

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched October 23, 2026 as a standalone release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Here's what's new at launch — reworked movement, DMZ's Forward Operating Base, the campaign's ending, and how critics have scored it so far.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is officially out. Infinity Ward's standalone follow-up to Black Ops 7 launched on October 23, 2026, and it takes over as the current mainline Call of Duty release — which means Warzone, ranked play, and the yearly live-service calendar all shift over to Modern Warfare 4 from here.

Here's what actually changed at launch: the reworked movement system, DMZ's return with new features, how the campaign wraps up its story, and what critics are saying about the finished game — plus a few quick tips for players jumping in during launch week.

1. Launch Details: Platforms, Price and Game Pass Status

Modern Warfare 4 released on October 23, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (via Battle.net, Steam and the Xbox app) and Nintendo Switch 2 — the first mainline Call of Duty release on Nintendo's new console. It is not coming to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, the first time in years a numbered Call of Duty has dropped last-gen support entirely. Infinity Ward led development, with Digital Legends handling the Switch 2 version and Beenox on PC.

Unlike recent entries, Modern Warfare 4 launched as a standalone purchase rather than shipping inside Xbox Game Pass. Activision confirmed on the official Call of Duty blog that the game "will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027," so Game Pass subscribers who want to play at launch still need to buy it separately. Game Pass Ultimate members do keep their existing access to Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III in the meantime.

Digital pre-orders came with a Hunter Killer Operator skin, a Gilded Pearl camo pack and an Inner Circuit M4 weapon blueprint, with Xbox players getting an OG Green variant of that blueprint marking 25 years of the Xbox brand. For everything on the standalone pricing structure and what pre-order buyers received, our breakdown of the Game Pass delay and pre-order bonuses covers it in full.

Activision first revealed the game and its release date back in May 2026. You can watch that original reveal trailer below.

2. New Movement System and Multiplayer Changes

Multiplayer launched with 12 core 6v6 maps alongside Gunfight and the larger-scale Big War mode, which mixes vehicle and infantry combat. The headline addition is Kill Block, a map whose layout physically shifts and reconfigures mid-match, forcing players to relearn sightlines on the fly. We've got a full breakdown of how that map works in our dedicated Kill Block mode explainer.

The bigger change is under the hood. Infinity Ward removed hipfire bloom, meaning shooting from the hip is now far more consistent instead of spraying wildly the longer you hold the trigger — a real shift for anyone used to tuning hipfire spread in past titles. Movement also got more physical: players can now hang and shimmy along ledges, edges and pipes, opening up new traversal routes across maps that previously had hard stops at windowsills and rooftops.

3. DMZ Returns, With a New Forward Operating Base

DMZ, the extraction mode that debuted in Modern Warfare II, is back for Modern Warfare 4. Squads of up to three deploy into an exclusion zone to scavenge gear, complete contracts and extract before time runs out — or before another squad gets to you first. This time around it adds a Forward Operating Base players can build up between raids, per-Operator trait trees for persistent progression, and dynamic weather that changes visibility and conditions mid-raid.

If you want the specifics on the FOB and the new Hajin map, our DMZ Hajin and Forward Operating Base guide goes deeper than we have room for here.

4. The Campaign: Korea, Captain Price and How the Story Ends

Spoiler warning: this section describes how the campaign resolves.

The campaign is set during a North Korean invasion of South Korea, which turns out to be one front in a larger Russian plan to use EMP weapons to invade Europe. You play as Private Park, a young South Korean soldier caught in the opening invasion, while Captain Price — operating as a fugitive pursuing a personal vendetta against Vladimir Makarov — works largely outside the chain of command. Missions take the story beyond Korea to New York, Paris and Mumbai as the Task Force 141 story that's been building across the rebooted Modern Warfare trilogy reaches its conclusion. Price's arc ends with his death following a confrontation with a character known as the Archer, on a frozen lake — closing out the character's story after three games.

If you want the full chain of events that led into this, our campaign build-up recap published ahead of launch covers every twist through the lead-up.

5. Critical Reception: What the Review Scores Say

Early review aggregation paints a strong, if platform-dependent, picture. According to the tallies cited on Modern Warfare 4's Wikipedia entry, the PC version sits at 87/100 on Metacritic ("generally favorable"), while the PS5 version scores notably higher at 91/100 ("universal acclaim"). OpenCritic's critic recommendation rate lands at 96%. That gap between PC and console scores is worth watching as more outlets weigh in over the coming days — it often points to performance or optimization differences rather than content differences.

Those numbers reflect critic impressions at launch rather than the post-launch content roadmap, which hasn't been detailed yet. Expect official season and Warzone integration news to follow in the weeks after launch, the same way it has for every Call of Duty title before it.

6. Quick Tips for Launch Week

  • Relearn hipfire habits. With bloom removed, hipfire is far more reliable up close than in Black Ops 7 — you don't need to compensate for spread the way you used to.
  • Use Gunfight to learn new maps fast. Its small-scale 2v2 format is the quickest way to pick up callouts on the 12 new core maps without committing to a full lobby.
  • Try the new shimmy and hang traversal early. Several maps have vertical routes over ledges and pipes that weren't possible in older titles — scout them in a casual mode before relying on them in ranked.
  • Run DMZ in a full three-stack if you can. The new Forward Operating Base and trait trees reward squads that play multiple raids together rather than solo drop-ins.
  • Check your inventory before your first match if you pre-ordered digitally — the Hunter Killer skin, Gilded Pearl camo pack and Inner Circuit blueprint don't always show up until you've entered a game once.
  • Watch for day-one hotfixes. Big launches typically bring balance adjustments within the first week; keep an eye on the official patch notes rather than trusting early community theorycrafting.

Modern Warfare 4 is live, and between the removed hipfire bloom, the new shimmy-and-hang traversal, Kill Block's shifting layout and DMZ's Forward Operating Base, there's a genuinely different game under the familiar Modern Warfare name this time. Whether you're coming straight from Black Ops 7 or skipped last year's entry entirely, launch week is the easiest time to learn the new systems before ranked play and the first Warzone integration arrive.
