Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, with Campaign Early Access starting October 16. Here's the full official recap of the Modern Warfare reboot trilogy, Captain Price's fall into outlaw status, and every confirmed campaign detail for Hajin City's invasion.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on October 23, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and for anyone who hasn't kept up with the reboot trilogy since 2019, Infinity Ward's own recap gives a clean, official rundown of how Captain Price ended up "AWOL and off the grid," teamed up with a cartel, and on a collision course with a full-scale invasion of South Korea. With Campaign Early Access going live on October 16 for pre-order and pre-purchase customers, here is every confirmed story beat leading into Modern Warfare 4, straight from Activision's own narrative recap.
This guide sticks strictly to what Infinity Ward and Activision have confirmed on the record — no leaks, no fan theories, just the trilogy recap and new campaign details the studio has published ahead of launch.
1. The Road to Modern Warfare 4: How the Reboot Trilogy Got Here
Modern Warfare 4 picks up directly from the fallout of three previous games. Infinity Ward's "Story So Far" recap walks through all of it, starting with the raid that kicked off the entire reboot.
Modern Warfare (2019): Verdansk, Urzikstan and the Birth of Task Force 141
The first flashpoint was Verdansk, where a squad of Marines and CIA operative Alex Keller raided a depot belonging to rogue Russian General Roman Barkov to recover a shipment of weaponized chlorine gas. The Marines were ambushed, the gas was stolen, and twenty-four hours later terrorist group Al-Qatala struck London's Piccadilly Circus, pulling SAS Captain John Price and Sergeant Kyle "Gaz" Garrick into the hunt for Al-Qatala's leader, "The Wolf."
CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell then sent Alex to Urzikstan to work with Commander Farah Karim of the Urzikstan Liberation Force against both Al-Qatala and Barkov's occupation. The joint force dismantled the Al-Raab Airbase, captured the Wolf at Rammaza Hospital, and discovered the stolen gas had actually been taken by Farah's brother Hadir Karim to use against the Russians. Price's task force then raided Barkov's chemical weapons site in Georgia — Alex apparently sacrificed himself to destroy it, and Farah killed Barkov. In the aftermath, Price requested the service files of Gaz, Johnny "Soap" MacTavish and Simon "Ghost" Riley, forming Task Force 141 with Laswell's backing.
Modern Warfare II (2022): Shepherd's Cover-Up and the Betrayal in Mexico
General Shepherd, partnered with Commander Phillip Graves' PMC Shadow Company, arranged to smuggle U.S. ballistic missiles to allies in the Middle East. The operation went wrong when Russian ultranationalists in the Konni Group intercepted the shipment, delivering American weapons into the hands of Vladimir Makarov. Rather than take responsibility, Shepherd ordered Shadow Company to silence anyone who got close to the truth.
Makarov passed the missiles to Major Hassan Zyani, who paid the Las Almas Cartel under Valeria Garza to smuggle them across the U.S.-Mexico border. Task Force 141, Shadow Company and Mexican unit Los Vaqueros (led by Colonel Alejandro Vargas) tracked down two of the three missiles — but when Ghost and Soap realized the weapons were American-made and radioed it in, a defensive Shepherd ordered them destroyed and ignored. Shadow Company then turned on Task Force 141 and Los Vaqueros in Las Almas: Alejandro was captured, Soap was wounded, and Ghost slipped away.
Modern Warfare III (2023): Soap's Death and Shepherd's Assassination
Makarov shifted to targeting Western Europe, planning to detonate a dirty bomb in the Channel Tunnel. Price and Soap moved to defuse it, but Makarov ambushed them — Soap stabbed Makarov to protect Price, and Makarov shot Soap, killing him. In response, Price assassinated General Shepherd for the role his cover-up played in letting Makarov prosper, then went underground to hunt Makarov himself.
2. Hajin City: North Korea's Invasion of the South
Modern Warfare 4's campaign opens with the full-scale invasion of Hajin City, as North Korea launches an attack that Activision describes as "setting a new ground for warfare without limits." Infinity Ward confirms the campaign takes players through "trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters combat in New York, high-speed chases through Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai, and a city-wide assault to reclaim occupied territory," making this the most globe-spanning entry in the rebooted series so far. The invasion of the Korean Peninsula is also what anchors the game's DMZ extraction mode, which is built around Hajin's Forward Operating Base.
3. Captain Price, Gone Dark
Following Shepherd's assassination, Price is operating entirely outside the system he once served. Activision's own framing is blunt: he's "AWOL and off the grid," teaming up with the Las Almas Cartel to track down a threat powerful enough to shift the global balance of power. The official recap describes him being "forced into uneasy alliances and illicit operations" he can no longer escape — a deliberate shift from Price as an institutional operator to Price as a man working the system's margins while a state-level invasion unfolds without him.
4. Private Park and the Front Line in South Korea
While Price's thread plays out half a world away, Modern Warfare 4's second playable perspective puts players in the boots of Private Park, a young South Korean soldier facing live combat for the first time alongside his squad as Hajin City falls under attack. Pairing a rookie infantryman's ground-level view of the invasion with Price's outlaw manhunt gives the campaign two very different vantage points on the same conflict — one institutional, one personal.
5. Watch the Making-Of Series: From The Ward
Infinity Ward has been publishing a behind-the-scenes documentary series called "From The Ward" covering the new chapter's story direction, multiplayer philosophy and weapon design. The first episode, embedded below, focuses specifically on how the studio approached opening a new chapter of Modern Warfare after Shepherd's death and Soap's loss in Modern Warfare III.
6. Campaign Early Access: How to Play Before the October 23 Launch
