VALORANT Champions Shanghai 2026: Group Stage Day 1 Results Explained
VALORANT Champions Shanghai 2026 kicked off on September 24, and Paper Rex and G2 Esports both won their Group C openers. Here's the full Day 1 recap, the tournament's format and groups, the Week One schedule, and how to watch and earn rewards through the October 18 Grand Final.
VALORANT Champions Shanghai 2026 is officially underway, and the opening matches on September 24 already delivered exactly the kind of tense, statement-making VALORANT that Riot Games promised when it brought the franchised era's final Champions event to China. Paper Rex and G2 Esports both won their Group C openers to kick off six weeks of competition between the best 16 teams in the game.
Here's a full recap of what happened on Day 1, plus the format, groups, schedule and viewer rewards you need to follow the rest of the tournament through the Grand Final on October 18.
1. Group Stage Day 1: Paper Rex and G2 Esports Open With Wins
Group C kicked off the tournament, and both of its higher-seeded teams left with wins to open. Paper Rex survived a fightback from Team Liquid to win 2-1: PRX took Ascent 13-4, Liquid answered on Haven 13-7, and PRX closed it out on Lotus 13-10. In the second match, G2 Esports swept TYLOO 2-0, winning 13-6 on the first map and 13-3 on the second to hand the Chinese franchise squad a rough start in its home region.
Those results mean Paper Rex and G2 can both lock up a playoff spot with one more win in the upper bracket of Group C, while Team Liquid and TYLOO now play an elimination match to stay alive.
2. What Is VALORANT Champions Shanghai 2026?
Champions is VALORANT's season-ending world championship, and the 2026 edition runs from September 24 to October 18 in Shanghai, China. It's the first time Champions itself has been held in China, following Shanghai's earlier turn hosting Masters Shanghai in 2024, and it also closes out the final season of the franchised VCT era before the competitive structure shifts toward open qualifiers in 2027.
Sixteen teams qualified, four from each of VALORANT's four regions (Americas, EMEA, Pacific and China), based on their Stage 2 playoff finishes and Championship Points earned across the 2026 season. Last year's champion, NRG, returns to defend its title after qualifying on points.
3. How the Tournament Format Works
Champions Shanghai runs in two stages:
Group Stage (September 24 - October 4)
The 16 teams are split into four groups of four. Each group plays a double-elimination mini-bracket: win two matches and you advance to playoffs, lose two and you're eliminated. Every group-stage match is best-of-three.
Playoffs (October 7 - 18)
The eight group-stage survivors move into a double-elimination playoff bracket at Shanghai's Mercedes-Benz Arena. Matches stay best-of-three until the lower bracket final and the Grand Final, which are both best-of-five.
4. The 16 Teams and Their Groups
Here's how the group stage draw broke down:
- Group A: 100 Thieves, T1, JD Gaming, FUT Esports
- Group B: Global Esports, Team Vitality, LOUD, Edward Gaming
- Group C: TYLOO, G2 Esports, Team Liquid, Paper Rex
- Group D: Karmine Corp, Xi Lai Gaming, Nongshim RedForce, NRG
By region, the full qualified list is: Americas - 100 Thieves, LOUD, NRG, G2 Esports; EMEA - Karmine Corp, Team Liquid, FUT Esports, Team Vitality; Pacific - Global Esports, Nongshim RedForce, Paper Rex, T1; China - TYLOO, JD Gaming, Edward Gaming, Xi Lai Gaming.

After a dark day on the 28th, the groups' upper-bracket matches continue September 29-30, lower-bracket matches run October 1-2, and each group's lower bracket final is played October 3-4 to decide the last playoff qualifiers.
6. How to Watch
Every match streams live on VALORANT's official YouTube and Twitch channels, with a vertical stream also running on TikTok. Riot is broadcasting in multiple languages, including dedicated channels for Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, French, Turkish, Chinese and Ukrainian audiences. Approved creators and pro players also run co-streams with secondary commentary, which you can find on Twitch, YouTube, Bilibili, Huya and Douyu.
7. Drops, Pick'Ems and Shotcall: Rewards for Watching
Riot is running three separate viewer-reward programs throughout Champions Shanghai:
- Drops: watch a minimum of 30 minutes during the Group Stage or Playoffs for the "Prepared" title, and watch 30 minutes of the Grand Final for the "Stamp of Approval" spray.
- Shotcall (Twitch desktop only): a live prediction extension where you call maps, rounds and clutch moments. Earn 50 cumulative points for "The Catch" title, 300 points for the "Crab Mentality" gun buddy, and finish in the top 3% on any single map for the "Frag or Die Trophy" player card.
- Pick'Ems, powered by AWS: complete your bracket predictions for the "Calculated" title, land in the top 50% for the "Stone of Heaven" gun buddy, crack the top 20% for the "Master: Stone of Heaven" buddy, and go perfect for the "100%" title.
8. What's Next for Group C and the Rest of the Field
In Group C, the winners' match between G2 Esports and Paper Rex is set for September 29, with the winner clinching a playoff berth outright. Team Liquid and TYLOO play their elimination match on October 1, and the loser is out of Shanghai entirely. The other three groups follow the same two-losses-and-out structure once their own openers wrap up September 25-27.
Riot has not published an official prize-pool breakdown by placement; esports trackers following the event list the total pool at roughly $2.25 million split among all 16 teams by final finish, with the largest share going to the eventual champion. We'll cover the bracket in more depth as the group stage plays out - for the tournament's full format, venue and team background, see our original Champions Shanghai tournament preview.
