Quick Summary

Minecraft launched officially on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, 2026, with the Vibrant Visuals lighting upgrade on by default and the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack included free. Here's what changed, how the free and discounted upgrade paths work for existing Switch owners, and what carries over.

Minecraft is now officially playable on Nintendo Switch 2. Mojang Studios shipped a native Switch 2 edition on October 27, 2026, bringing the game's "Vibrant Visuals" graphics upgrade, the Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack and a free upgrade path for existing Switch owners. Here is everything confirmed so far about the new version, what actually changed, and how to move your existing worlds over.

1. What Launched on October 27

The Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Minecraft is a standalone digital release on the Nintendo eShop, priced at $29.99. It runs natively on Switch 2 hardware rather than through backward compatibility, which is what makes the Vibrant Visuals lighting overhaul possible in the first place. The listing confirms support for TV, tabletop and handheld play, a 1.5 GB download size, and an ESRB rating of Fantasy Violence, with Users Interact and In-Game Purchases as additional content descriptors.

2. What Vibrant Visuals Actually Changes

Vibrant Visuals is Mojang's lighting and shading overhaul, and on Switch 2 it is turned on by default rather than being an optional toggle players have to dig for. It adds directional shadows, softer ambient lighting, volumetric fog and light shafts, and more realistic water and foliage shading. The effect is most noticeable underwater and at sunrise or sunset, where the original flat lighting model previously made biomes look much the same regardless of time of day.

The upgrade isn't available everywhere, though. Nintendo's own listing confirms Vibrant Visuals is not active during split-screen play or with certain Marketplace content, so players running local co-op on one console will see the standard lighting model instead. That's a reasonable trade-off: split-screen already splits the console's rendering budget between two views, and the extra lighting passes would be expensive to run twice at once.

Players coming from the Wilderness Bound update will already be familiar with the newer biomes this lighting engine was built to show off; if you haven't caught up on what shipped there, our breakdown of the Wilderness Bound update covers the dappled forest and abandoned camps now getting the Vibrant Visuals treatment.

3. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack Is Included

Every copy of Minecraft for Switch 2 comes with the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, a Nintendo-exclusive content pack that has been part of the Switch version since launch and has now been rebuilt for the new visuals. It replaces the default world, textures and music with a Mushroom Kingdom-themed set: a custom world built around Mario landmarks, 40 playable skins covering characters like Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi and Bowser, and 15 remixed music tracks pulled from the Super Mario series.

In practice, the pack turns the Mushroom Kingdom's landmarks and set pieces into fully explorable Minecraft blocks, complete with recognizable obstacles like floating ? blocks, fire-flower hazards and castle courses rebuilt from scratch. It's a cosmetic and world pack rather than a gameplay mod, so the underlying survival and creative mechanics are unchanged; it just reskins the experience.

4. Upgrading From Nintendo Switch: What's Free and What Costs Extra

Mojang built a specific upgrade path for anyone who already owns Minecraft on the original Switch, and it has two tiers:

  • Free upgrade: Players with a digital copy of Minecraft on Nintendo Switch can claim the digital Standard Edition on Switch 2 at no extra cost through the Nintendo eShop, in most regions.
  • Discounted upgrade: Players who launch their existing Switch version of the game on a Switch 2 console between October 27, 2026 and January 31, 2027 can instead get a discount toward Minecraft: Ultimate Collection, Mojang's bundle that includes additional content packs.

Either way, your existing worlds aren't orphaned: save data from the Nintendo Switch version carries over to the Switch 2 edition, so there's no need to re-download or rebuild anything to keep playing a long-running survival world.

5. Multiplayer, Split-Screen and Cross-Platform Play

The Switch 2 edition keeps the full range of multiplayer options the series is known for. Locally, up to four players can play on a single system, and local wireless play supports two to eight players. Split-screen is supported for couch co-op, though as noted above it runs without Vibrant Visuals enabled. Online, the game supports cross-platform play with other Minecraft platforms, which requires a Microsoft account, alongside standard online multiplayer for up to eight players through a Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately).

If you're planning to host a persistent world for friends rather than relying on drop-in local or cross-platform sessions, it's worth setting up a Minecraft Realms server and sharing an invite code so everyone can jump in without needing to be online at the same time.

6. How This Fits Into Minecraft's Bigger 2026 Roadmap

The Switch 2 launch arrives alongside a busy stretch for the Minecraft franchise. Minecraft Dungeons II, the spin-off action RPG, launched its own Switch 2 version in late September, and our guide to Minecraft Dungeons II's release, story and new mechanics covers what that separate game adds if you want more than the core sandbox experience. Mojang also used September's Minecraft Live showcase to detail what's coming next for the base game, including a new dimension still in testing; everything Mojang announced at Minecraft Live 2026 is worth a read if you want to know what's landing after this Switch 2 release settles in.

7. Official Launch Trailer

Nintendo of America published the official launch trailer for the Switch 2 edition on release day, showing Vibrant Visuals lighting across several biomes alongside Super Mario Mash-Up Pack footage.
