Quick Summary

Minecraft's native Nintendo Switch 2 edition launches today, October 27, 2026, with Vibrant Visuals lighting on by default, a rebuilt Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, and a free upgrade path for existing digital Switch owners through January 2027.

Minecraft's long-promised native Nintendo Switch 2 edition arrives today, October 27, 2026, bringing a graphics overhaul, a rebuilt Super Mario crossover pack, and a limited-time free upgrade for existing Switch owners. Here is exactly what changes, what it costs, and how to claim the upgrade before the window closes.

1. Minecraft's Native Switch 2 Launch Date

Mojang confirmed the release in a post on minecraft.net: "Minecraft is coming for Nintendo Switch™ 2 on October 27th!" That is today, and the native version is now available to buy and download from the Nintendo eShop, both as a digital purchase and as a physical Game-Key Card in stores.

This is not the original 2017 "Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition" running through backward compatibility. It is a separate, Switch 2-specific build that takes advantage of the console's extra power, and it is the version Mojang is pointing both new and existing players toward going forward.

2. Vibrant Visuals: The Default Graphics Upgrade

The headline feature is Vibrant Visuals, Mojang's lighting and shadow overhaul, which ships as the default visual mode on Switch 2 rather than an opt-in toggle. Mojang describes it as adding directional lighting, volumetric fog and improved shadows: sunlight moves across the sky and casts real shadows, water reflects the surrounding world, light plays across lake beds, and clouds stretch toward the horizon instead of cutting off abruptly.

Vibrant Visuals first launched for Bedrock Edition on other platforms back in 2025, so Switch 2 is catching up to a feature that has already been tested at scale — this is a console debut, not a brand-new experimental system.

What it looks like in practice

Mojang's own comparison shots show the difference most clearly in biomes with open water or strong light sources: deserts at sunset, snowy tundras, and dense jungles all pick up reflections and volumetric haze that the standard renderer doesn't produce. Builders should also notice the effect indoors, where torches and lanterns now cast more distinct, directional shadows instead of flat ambient light.

3. Where Vibrant Visuals Doesn't Reach

Mojang's own footnote on the announcement is worth reading before you boot the game up: Vibrant Visuals is not available in some gameplay, including split-screen play, and it does not apply to certain Marketplace worlds and content. If you regularly play split-screen with a second Joy-Con, expect the game to fall back to the standard lighting model in that mode. Some older Marketplace worlds built before Vibrant Visuals existed also won't render with the new effects, even though the setting is on by default everywhere else.

Because the feature changes visuals only and doesn't touch gameplay mechanics, players on Vibrant Visuals and players without it can still play together on the same Realm or server without compatibility issues.

4. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, Rebuilt for Switch 2

Alongside the graphics update, the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack — a Nintendo-console exclusive since it first launched — is getting an update specifically to take advantage of Vibrant Visuals. The pack includes a custom Mario-themed world, a Mario-inspired music set, and a collection of character skins, with recognizable locations such as Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza rebuilt into the world. Mojang confirms the Mash-Up Pack is included with every edition of the Switch 2 release, not sold separately.

5. Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate: What Each Edition Includes

Minecraft for Switch 2 ships in three tiers, all including the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack and Vibrant Visuals as the baseline:

  • Standard Edition — the base game with the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack and Vibrant Visuals. Listed at $29.99 in the US and €29.99 in the EU.
  • Deluxe Collection — adds the Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs and Plenty O'Blocks Marketplace content, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins. Mojang has not published an exact US dollar price for this tier.
  • Ultimate Collection — adds everything in Deluxe plus the Decocraft and Weapons + Tools Marketplace packs, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1,000 Minecoins. Mojang has not published an exact US dollar price for this tier either.

Minecoins bundled with a Nintendo purchase are tied to the Nintendo ecosystem and can't be spent on Minecoin balances tied to other platforms.

6. The Free Upgrade Path for Existing Switch Owners

If you already own a digital copy of "Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition," Mojang is offering a limited-time, no-cost route onto the new version. Per the official pre-order page, the offer runs through the end of January 2027 and works like this:

  • Digital owners can claim the Switch 2 Standard Edition for free through the Nintendo eShop in most territories.
  • Three regions are excluded from the free offer and instead charge a small regional fee: Japan (100 JPY), Taiwan (30 NTD) and Thailand (25 THB).
  • Owners who want more than the Standard tier can put the value of their existing purchase toward a discounted upgrade to the Deluxe or Ultimate Collection, though Mojang hasn't published the discounted amounts.
  • Simply running your old Switch cartridge or digital copy through backward compatibility on a Switch 2 does not count as claiming this upgrade — you still need to redeem it separately through the eShop.

After January 31, 2027, Mojang hasn't said whether the free claim will still be available, so digital owners who want to lock in the no-cost path should redeem it well before the deadline.

7. What Physical Cartridge Owners Should Know

As of launch day, Mojang has not confirmed an upgrade path for players who bought a physical Switch 1 cartridge rather than a digital copy. If you own the game on a cartridge, the safest assumption right now is that you'll need to buy the Switch 2 Standard Edition at full price unless Mojang announces otherwise. Keep an eye on official Minecraft and Nintendo channels for updates on this specifically — it's the one detail still unresolved from the original announcement.

8. Quick Tips Recap

  • Minecraft for Switch 2 launched today, October 27, 2026, as a standalone native build — not the old Switch 1 version run through backward compatibility.
  • Vibrant Visuals is on by default, adding directional lighting, reflections and volumetric fog, but it's disabled in split-screen and on some older Marketplace content.
  • Every edition includes the rebuilt Super Mario Mash-Up Pack with Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza locations.
  • Digital Switch 1 owners get a free Standard Edition claim through the eShop until the end of January 2027 (small regional fees apply in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand).
  • Physical cartridge owners currently have no confirmed upgrade path — check official channels before assuming otherwise.
