Quick Summary

Game Informer's full September 29 cover story confirms over 170 wildlife species, hurricanes, a dozen new screenshots and a long list of side activities for GTA 6's Leonida — here's everything revealed, built on the earlier cover-story announcement.

Rockstar Games' partnership with Game Informer finally bore fruit on September 29, 2026, when the magazine published its full 14-page Grand Theft Auto VI cover story. Three days earlier, Game Informer had only confirmed that GTA 6 would front its next issue; the September 29 feature is the real payoff, built on exclusive interviews with Rockstar and a dozen new screenshots. It confirms, in concrete numbers for the first time, how deep Leonida's wildlife and weather systems go, and lays out a long list of side activities players will be able to do between missions.

Here is everything the cover story confirmed, what it means next to what Rockstar has already shown, and how it fits into the countdown to the game's November 19, 2026 release.

1. What Changed Since the September 26 Cover Announcement

Rockstar and Game Informer first confirmed the cover story was coming on September 26, promising a look at weather, wildlife and Rockstar's Florida research. The September 29 issue delivered on that promise with specifics: a dozen new screenshots, a cover illustration of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos sitting in a car with guns drawn, and pages of direct quotes from the Rockstar team on how they built Leonida's ecosystem and climate. Game Informer frames the piece as an attempt to show "the most culturally and aesthetically accurate and lifelike world to date," grounded in on-the-ground research trips to Miami and the rest of Florida.

2. Leonida's Wildlife: More Than 170 Species

The headline number from the feature is wildlife density: Rockstar says Leonida will be home to more than 170 animal species, including over 60 types of birds and more than 30 land mammals, alongside reptiles and fish spread across the map's urban, rural, aquatic and wetland biomes. Named examples include manatees, flamingos, pelicans and alligators in and around the waterways, feral cats and monkeys on land, and whales, turtles and jellyfish out in the ocean. Rockstar is also including rarer "Legendary" animals that players will need to actively search for, rather than everyday creatures that simply populate the background.

Game Informer also details the tech behind the animals rather than just the roster: Rockstar is giving wildlife individual fur and feather systems, plus visual traits like iridescence, bioluminescence and translucency depending on the species, so a pelican's feathers and a jellyfish's body are meant to read differently up close. A zoo location is also part of the map, giving Rockstar a controlled space to showcase species that wouldn't naturally wander into the open world.

3. Weather That Can Turn Dangerous: Hurricanes and Wind-Driven Water

Weather was already known to be an evolution of the dynamic system Rockstar built for Red Dead Redemption 2, with rain that leaves puddles and wet surfaces that stay visible long after a storm passes and can catch rainbows in the right light. The new detail from this cover story is that Leonida's weather can escalate into full hurricanes, with wind strong enough to blow visible ripples and chop across open water. Combined with the existing rain and puddle systems, it points to Rockstar treating Florida's storm season as a real gameplay and atmosphere feature rather than a backdrop detail.

4. Thirteen New Screenshots: What They Show

The accompanying screenshots mix calm and chaotic moments. Several show relaxed activities — time on the beach, rural landscapes with colorful foliage — while others capture tense sequences: characters taking cover, escaping a scene, or moving in stealth. Across the set, Rockstar varies the weather and time of day, and works in glimpses of planes and wildlife moving through the frame, reinforcing that Leonida is meant to feel lived-in rather than staged for a single hero shot.

For a closer look at the world itself, Rockstar's own gameplay presentation remains the best official source of continuous footage:

5. Side Activities Confirmed: Gyms, Mini Golf, Scuba Diving and More

Beyond wildlife and weather, the cover story adds detail to the growing list of side activities Rockstar has confirmed for Leonida. Fitness and combat options include gym workouts and weightlifting (playable alongside your partner), basketball, and boxing or MMA-style fighting. Water-based activities cover fishing, swimming, scuba diving, kayaking, jet-skiing and airboating through the wetlands. For speed, there's street racing, dirt-bike racing and arena-style racing, and for downtime there's mini golf and billiards. Players can also go hunting in Mount Kalaga National Park, or try sky-diving and base-jumping off Leonida's taller buildings and cliffs.

None of this is framed as filler. Rockstar's interviews tie the activities directly back to the wildlife and weather work: fishing and scuba diving exist partly to put players face-to-face with the animal roster, and outdoor activities like hunting and kayaking are staged in the biomes — wetlands, national park, open water — that the studio says it built around real Florida ecosystems.

6. Jason, Lucia and the World Around Them

The cover artwork itself keeps the focus on the two leads, showing Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos together in a car with guns drawn, and Game Informer's interviews repeatedly return to how the world reacts to their actions rather than treating Leonida as a static map. That framing lines up with what's already known about how Jason and Lucia's partnership develops over the course of the story, with the wildlife, weather and side activities detailed here forming the backdrop the two protagonists move through.

7. Why This Matters Ahead of November 19

Rockstar has already described Leonida as roughly twice the size of GTA 5's map and considerably denser, spread across the six regions covered in our breakdown of Vice City and the rest of Leonida. This cover story is the clearest sign yet that the extra space isn't just geography — it's meant to be filled with a working ecosystem, activities tied to specific biomes, and weather that can actually disrupt whatever you're doing. With GTA 6 now a little under two months from release, expect more of this kind of granular confirmation as Rockstar works through its marketing calendar; players mapping out day-one plans can also check our pre-load guide for November 19 for timing details.
