Who is Georg Solti?

Sir Georg Solti was a renowned Hungarian-British conductor, known for his energetic conducting style and his significant influence on the classical music world during the 20th century. Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1912, Solti initially trained as a pianist at the Liszt Academy, but his career was largely defined by his achievements as a conductor.

He held a number of prestigious positions throughout his career. Notably, he served as the music director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, from 1961 to 1971, where he helped to elevate the company’s international status. He also served as the music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1969 until 1991, where he became famous for his dynamic and precise performances, particularly of works by Mahler, Wagner, and Bartók.

Solti received numerous awards and accolades, including multiple Grammy Awards, more than any other classical record artist. He was also knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1972 and became a life peer in 1979.
