GTA 6 Weapons and Combat Explained: Every System Confirmed From the Trailers
Rockstar has never released a full weapons list for Grand Theft Auto VI, but its own trailers and the 27-minute Extended Look already confirm how gunfights, the weapon wheel and cover will work. Here's everything shown so far, straight from official Rockstar footage.
Rockstar Games has still never published a weapons list or a combat manual for Grand Theft Auto VI. What it has done is show the systems in action, first in two cinematic trailers and then, on August 27, 2026, in a 27-minute in-engine preview called Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look. That footage, captured on a base PS5, is the closest thing to an official gunplay demo the game has received, and it settles several questions about how shootouts, the weapon wheel and gear management will actually work at launch on November 19, 2026.
Here is everything Rockstar has confirmed about weapons and combat so far, sourced only from the studio's own trailers and the Extended Look itself.
1. What Rockstar Has Actually Shown
The Extended Look follows protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos through several action sequences in Leonida, including a robbery, a street-level shootout and a chase, all captured from direct gameplay rather than pre-rendered cinematics. Because Rockstar released the full video on its own YouTube channel and the official Grand Theft Auto VI website, every claim in this guide can be checked frame-by-frame against the source material rather than a leak or a rumor.
2. The Weapon Wheel Redesign
The familiar radial weapon wheel returns, but Rockstar has rebuilt it into two connected wheels instead of one long list. The main wheel is dedicated to firearms, while a second wheel holds items and equipment, and the game lets players cycle between the two with a single shoulder button rather than backing all the way out to the main menu-style wheel every time. Compared to the single sprawling wheel in Grand Theft Auto V, this is a much faster way to move from a rifle to a med kit mid-fight.
3. A Limited Loadout, Not a Bottomless Arsenal
One of the clearest changes from GTA V is how much a character can physically carry. Rather than an unlimited wheel that quietly stores every gun a player has ever picked up, the Extended Look shows Jason and Lucia limited to two rifle-class weapons and two pistol-class weapons on their person at once. Anything beyond that has to be left behind, stored in a vehicle trunk, or kept at a safehouse instead of following the character everywhere. It is a smaller, more deliberate loadout than the series has used before, closer in spirit to the limited satchel Rockstar built for Red Dead Redemption 2 than to GTA V's pocket dimension.
4. Quick-Swapping Without Opening the Wheel
Combat does not always stop for the wheel, either. In one Extended Look sequence at an outdoor shooting range, Lucia swaps between a rifle and her sidearm instantly with a single button press, without the action pausing to open the weapon wheel at all. That quick-swap appears to be limited to two weapons kept ready at once, while anything else in the loadout still requires opening the wheel to select.
5. Gear Beyond Guns: Confirmed Equipment
The second, items-focused wheel is not just for weapons. Equipment visibly confirmed in the Extended Look and the accompanying screenshots includes binoculars, body armor, a flashlight, food and drink items, duffel bags for carrying stolen loot, and trauma kits for healing. Rockstar also shows a one-handed reload animation while a character is holding a loot bag in the other hand, a small detail that suggests carrying stolen cash or goods will restrict what else a player can do mid-fight.
6. Cover, AI and Destructible Environments
Jason and Lucia both use waist-high cover throughout the Extended Look's shootout sequences, ducking behind vehicles, counters and low walls while exchanging fire. Enemy AI reacts in kind, taking cover of its own and repositioning rather than standing in the open, and several environments shown in the footage are at least partially destructible, with cover objects and scenery breaking apart under gunfire over the course of a fight. None of this is a full breakdown of enemy AI logic, since Rockstar has not published one, but the behavior is directly visible in the released footage rather than inferred from a leak.
7. Stocking Up: Ammu-Nation, Trunks and Safehouses
With carrying capacity capped, storage becomes part of the loadout strategy. Series-standard gun store Ammu-Nation returns as a place to buy and store weapons, and the Extended Look and surrounding screenshots indicate that anything not kept on a character's body can instead be stashed in a vehicle's trunk or left at a safehouse for later. That matches the wider shift toward a more grounded, inventory-conscious approach to guns rather than the arcade-style stockpiling of previous entries.
8. How It Compares to GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2
Long-time players will recognize where these ideas came from. Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar's previous release, already experimented with a limited satchel, a dual-wheel select system for weapons and items, and a slower, more deliberate approach to gunfights than GTA V's. The Extended Look suggests Rockstar is carrying that philosophy into a modern, contemporary-set game rather than treating it as a one-off fit for a Western. The core loop from GTA V, holding a huge arsenal and switching freely between it mid-firefight, is gone in the footage shown so far, replaced by something closer to choosing your loadout before you commit to a job and living with that choice once the shooting starts.
That shift also lines up with how the Extended Look frames its action sequences. Fights spill across multiple spaces, streets, rooftops, and waterfront docks, forcing Jason and Lucia to reposition and use cover rather than stand and trade shots in one spot, and the destructible scenery gives both the player and enemy AI reasons to keep moving instead of holding a single angle.
9. What's Still Unconfirmed
It's worth being precise about what Rockstar has not shown. There is no official weapons list, no confirmation of a lock-on or auto-aim option, and no word on whether melee combat will get the same overhaul as gunplay. Dual-wielding, a fixture of earlier games, does not appear in the Extended Look footage shown so far and looks to have been dropped in favor of the quick-swap system instead. Treat any specific weapon-by-weapon breakdown you see elsewhere as unofficial until Rockstar confirms it directly, especially this close to launch when misinformation tends to spike.
10. Release Date and Official Resources
Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with pre-loading opening November 12. Rockstar has said the extra development time was spent on polish rather than new systems, so the combat framework shown in the Extended Look is likely close to what ships at launch, though Rockstar could still make changes before release.

- Two weapons can be quick-swapped instantly without opening the wheel.
- Confirmed equipment includes binoculars, armor, a flashlight, food, duffel bags and trauma kits.
- Cover is standard in fights, AI takes cover too, and some environments are destructible.
