Gardenscapes Explained: Match-3 Puzzles, Garden Renovation and Events
Gardenscapes is Playrix's long-running match-3 puzzle game about rebuilding a family garden. Here's how the match-3 boards, boosters, renovation loop and live events fit together, based on Playrix's own store listings and release notes.
Gardenscapes is Playrix's match-3 puzzle game about rebuilding a run-down family garden one level at a time, and nearly a decade after launch it is still one of the highest-grossing puzzle titles on mobile. Here is how the match-3 boards, boosters, renovation loop and live events fit together, straight from Playrix's own store listings and release notes.
1. What Is Gardenscapes?
Gardenscapes is a free-to-play match-3 puzzle game developed and published by Playrix. It first reached Android devices in North America on July 5, 2016 and iOS in North America on August 25, 2016, and the App Store listing still describes it as "the first game from the Playrix Scapes™ series." The current build (version 9.9.5) advertises more than 16,000 levels, and the game sits in Apple's Puzzle, Casual and Entertainment categories.
The game has stayed popular for years: it currently holds roughly 4.7 out of 5 stars from over 1.6 million App Store ratings and a near-identical 4.7 out of 5 from more than 13.3 million Google Play ratings, according to each store's own listing data.
2. The Story: A Family Garden and Austin the Butler
Gardenscapes frames its levels around a simple setup: your character inherits a grandfather's mansion and its overgrown garden, and teams up with the estate's veteran butler, Austin, to bring it back to life. Playrix's own app description puts it this way: "Solve fun puzzles, restore and explore new areas of the garden, and meet new friends in every chapter of the exciting storyline. Austin the butler is ready to welcome you to a world of incredible adventures!"
Austin narrates almost every stage of the renovation, cracking jokes and handing out tasks between puzzle levels, and he's the same character Playrix later reused as the host of its sister title, Homescapes, which follows Austin into a full house renovation instead of a garden.
3. How the Match-3 Puzzles Work
Each level is a standard match-3 board: swipe to swap two adjacent pieces (fruit, flowers and other garden-themed icons) so that three or more of the same type line up, clearing them from the board. Boards include blocked or chained tiles that need to be cleared with nearby matches before they open up, and every level has a limited number of moves shown in a counter at the bottom of the screen, so the goal is to clear the level's targets before you run out of moves.
Matching four or more pieces in a row, in an L/T shape, or in other special patterns creates stronger pieces that clear large sections of the board at once — the same basic match-3 grammar used across the genre, dressed up with Gardenscapes' fruit, flower and garden-tool artwork.
4. Boosters and Power-Ups
Playrix's official description promises "explosive power-ups, useful boosters, and cool elements" across the game's levels, and the booster tray sits along the side of every board. Boosters are earned by clearing tough levels, handed out through events, or bought with in-game currency, and they're built to be saved for boards where you're short on moves or stuck on a specific blocked tile rather than burned on easy levels. Players who enjoy this part of Gardenscapes should also look at Royal Match, a match-3 rival built almost entirely around booster combinations, for a direct point of comparison.
5. Renovating the Garden
Clearing a level earns stars, and stars are spent on renovation tasks back at the garden — the actual city-building layer that sits between match-3 boards. Playrix describes "one-of-a-kind garden areas with unique layouts, from fountain ensembles to island landscapes," and the renovation loop runs through a few repeating steps shown right in the game's own store screenshots: collecting raw materials like flowers, filling customer orders at a garden shop for coins, and later stages that add treasure-hunting detail, including a hidden-object-style magnifying glass search and a garden dog companion.
Decorating After the Rebuild
Once an area is structurally restored, players can usually choose between a handful of decoration options for furniture, flower beds and statues, letting each garden look at least somewhat different from other players' versions even though everyone is following the same level sequence.
6. Events: Expeditions and the Pin-Pulling Mini-Game
Alongside the main level list, Playrix runs limited-time events it brands "Expeditions," along with team challenges against other players, as part of the live-service side of the game. The version 9.9.5 release notes, posted in September 2026, describe the live event at the time as the "Polar Station Mystery," tasking players to "help Rachel find out what happened to the scientists and escape the icy trap" — a reminder that Gardenscapes' event lineup rotates regularly and isn't limited to garden chores.
Roughly every twentieth level also swaps the match-3 format for a "pin-pulling" mini-puzzle, where the goal is to remove pins or pegs in the right order to drop an object safely. These mini-games became notable outside the fanbase in October 2020, when the UK's Advertising Standards Authority banned a set of Gardenscapes ads for showing mainly pin-pulling puzzles when the core game is match-3 — worth knowing if you downloaded the game expecting more of that specific puzzle type.
7. Tips for New Players
- Read the level goal before your first swap. Boards can ask you to clear a target number of specific pieces, break blocked tiles, or drop an item to the bottom — the fastest route often isn't just "make the biggest match available."
- Save strong boosters for levels you've already failed once. Since boosters are limited, it's more efficient to deploy them once you know exactly which part of a board is giving you trouble.
- Don't ignore the renovation screen. Stars are only useful once you spend them on the garden, and some renovation tasks unlock further levels or events, so check back after every few boards instead of stockpiling stars indefinitely.
- Treat pin-pulling levels as a separate skill. They reward careful observation of which pin is actually load-bearing rather than fast tapping, so slow down rather than guessing.
- Watch for Expedition and limited-time events in the game's event tab — they often hand out boosters and currency for a smaller time investment than grinding regular levels.
8. Gardenscapes by the Numbers
Gardenscapes' scale is well documented. According to Wikipedia's sourced history of the game, it passed one million downloads on its first day on the App Store, was named Facebook's Overall Game of the Year for 2016, and was nominated for Mobile Game of the Year at the 20th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards. By 2019 it was reportedly the fifth-highest-grossing puzzle game worldwide, with around $1.5 billion earned from in-app purchases and more than 213 million total installs. By 2021, lifetime revenue was reported at close to $2 billion with roughly 461 million total downloads, and the game reportedly kept more than 10 million daily active players during the COVID-19 pandemic. More recent reporting puts an additional $1.5 billion in revenue generated between 2022 and 2024, suggesting the game's audience has stayed large nearly a decade after launch.
9. Quick Tips Recap
- Gardenscapes is a free match-3 puzzle game from Playrix, first released in 2016, with 16,000+ levels in the current build.
- Stars earned from match-3 levels fund a garden renovation loop with its own collecting, order-filling and decorating steps.
- The booster tray and special match patterns (4+ in a row, L/T shapes) are the main tools for clearing tough boards — save them for levels you've already failed.
- Roughly every 20th level swaps in a pin-pulling mini-puzzle instead of match-3.
- Expeditions and other limited-time events rotate regularly and are worth checking between regular levels.
