EA Sports FC 27: Review Scores and What Critics Are Saying Explained
EA Sports FC 27's reviews are in: a generally favorable aggregate score, praise for manual defending and a reworked Career Mode, and consistent criticism that the new open-world Grounds hub feels thin. Here's what critics are actually saying, plus what Title Update 1.0.1 fixed.
EA Sports FC 27 launched worldwide on September 25, 2026, and with the first wave of post-launch patches now out, the review picture has settled. The aggregate verdict is a familiar one for the series: a solid, incrementally improved football game whose biggest new idea — the open-world social hub The Grounds — is the part critics like the least.
Here is what the reviews actually say about gameplay, Career Mode, Ultimate Team and The Grounds, plus what the Title Update 1.0.1 patch changed right out of the gate.
1. The Scorecard: What the Review Aggregates Say
EA Sports FC 27's aggregate critic score sits in the high 70s out of 100, landing in "generally favorable" territory across roughly 50 outlets. The split skews heavily positive: the large majority of reviews are positive, a smaller share are mixed, and only a handful are negative. That lines up with how last year's FC 26 was received — a steady, not spectacular, critical reaction.
The recurring line across reviews is that FC 27 plays like a refined version of FC 26 rather than a reinvention. Individual scores back that up: Game Informer landed at 7.25/10, while TheSixthAxis and GamingBolt both scored it 8/10. All three single out the same strengths and the same weak spot, which is The Grounds.
2. On the Pitch: How the Gameplay Changes Landed
Manual Defending Gets Rewarded
The headline gameplay change this year removes some of the AI's defensive autopilot. Defenders no longer auto-attempt standing tackles the moment an attacker drifts into range, and their interception range was trimmed — so players have to actively switch defenders, hold position and time challenges by hand instead of letting the CPU do it. Reviewers generally welcomed this: Game Informer noted that "manual control of your defenders is better rewarded" this year, and praised the new curved attacking runs for helping forwards stay onside more naturally.
Still Some Rough Edges
It isn't all smooth. The same reviews flag that frantic passages of play can still leave you in control of the wrong player after a switch, and that CPU teammates occasionally make questionable decisions off the ball. Corners and crosses were also reworked this year — corners let you jostle for position inside the box before delivery, and crosses now target open space rather than locking onto a specific teammate — changes that reviewers mostly rated as a net positive for build-up play.
3. The Grounds: Critics Aren't Sold on EA's Open World
The Grounds is FC 27's biggest swing — an open-world social hub spread across three districts (Parkside, Montclair and Zeiza) where your custom avatar can play pickup street-football variants, football-meets-basketball minigames, and 11v11 Clubs matches, guided by mentor characters including Kylian Mbappé and Alex Hunter. It's exclusive to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and it's clearly built as EA's answer to NBA 2K's The City. For a full breakdown of how its districts, Archetypes and Amps system actually work, see our guide to The Grounds' Clubs, Archetypes and Amps.
Critics are consistently cooler on it than EA's marketing suggested they'd be. GamingBolt called it "half baked and shallow," citing thin content and awkward movement. TheSixthAxis said it "lacks a truly compelling atmosphere and will need fresh content to keep people invested," and Game Informer's review was blunter still, describing The Grounds as not "as all-encompassing as NBA 2K's City" and noting that it currently functions mainly as "where sweats are grinding for FC Season points" rather than a space casual players want to hang around in.
4. Career Mode Is the Clear Standout
If there's a mode critics agree actually moved forward this year, it's Career Mode. The new Dynamic OVR system and a negotiation tension meter for transfers both got specific praise for making the manager experience feel more deliberate — GamingBolt called the overhauled transfer system a "meaningful, long overdue" improvement, and Game Informer agreed the changes make Career Mode "more intuitive," even while noting the rivalry system remains "too barebones" to generate real season-to-season drama on its own. Career Mode at launch also added Manager Live, a set of live challenge objectives, plus Creator Challenges that let players build and share custom scenarios, and new unlockable ICONs including Kaká, Raúl and Robin van Persie across Season 1. Our Career Mode explainer covers how Manager Live and the new ICON unlocks actually work.
5. Ultimate Team: A New Gallery, a Different Kind of Grind
Football Ultimate Team's headline addition is the Gallery system, which lets players build themed sets around clubs, leagues and item rarities for re-gradable rewards — reviewers flagged it as the mode's standout new feature. EA also increased starting coins and shifted a larger share of Objective and game-mode rewards to tradeable items, changes aimed squarely at complaints about FC 26's progression pace. The tradeoff, per multiple reviews, is that FUT still leans arcade-heavy online, favoring high-scoring matches over tactical defending.
Some of FUT's rough edges got patched almost immediately: Title Update 1.0.1, EA's first post-launch patch, fixed a bug where the UI could become unresponsive after selecting a Player Item that didn't meet the "Filter Evolutions By Player" requirements, alongside fixes to The Grounds (5-star Skill Moves being blocked for qualifying avatars, Hot Join failures, and inflated ping readings in League Matches) and a moderate increase to Jockey and Sprint Jockey Speed defaults in Authentic Gameplay. See the full Title Update 1.0.1 patch notes for the complete list.
6. What's Next for FC 27 in Season 1
Season 1 is scheduled to run through October 22. It launched alongside the game with European Nights, a UEFA Champions League-themed event running through The Grounds and FUT, and EA's season roadmap has confirmed a Halloween-themed Screaming Grounds event is coming later in the season as part of the live-service content plan, alongside the Team of the Week Community Vote that lets players help pick one featured player per squad. Whether that cadence of seasonal content is enough to answer the "shallow" criticism aimed at The Grounds is the open question heading into October.
